DIY Project: Bendy Candles

House of Hobby - Bendy Candles

A custom candle project you will fall in love with. There are so many variations and unique ways to create bendy candles. They are a fun addition to any room.

What you need:

-        Long stem candles.
The candles we used are slightly tapered, sourced from Red Dot. You can also find these candles on ebay, amazon or your fave candle shop.

-        Warm water bath.
Around 50 degrees, warm enough to soften the candles but cool enough to touch. Mix boiling a room temp water, this is important as you do not want the candles to melt).

-        Cool water bath.

Cold water from the tap will work fine, in a vessel large enough to place a candle.

-        Optional: Rolling pin

How to make the candles:

-        Place your candles in the warm water bath, do not overload with candles, we want to avoid them sticking together.

-        Wait for 15 minutes while the candles soften (hello wine or tea time)

-        You will be able to feel the soft candles with your fingers, add additional hot water if the candles aren’t softening quick enough.

-        Slowly and gentle bend your candles to your desired shape (see below on how to create the different styles).

-        Once you are happy with the style, dunk your candle in hot water to set the shape.

-        Style & enjoy!

How to make the different styles:

-        Snake (Blue)
Slowly bend your candle in an S shape, once finished stand the candle up and flatten the standing surfaces on the bottom of the dish. This will help the candle stand upright once finished.

-        Long Twist (Pink)
Once soft, flatten the top half on your candle. Either with your hands or use a rolling pin for assistance. Then start twisting your candle from the top to create a swirl effect.

-        Curve (Purple)

Like the snake design, slowly manipulate your candle to look like it is bending around something. We found visualising what the candle is bending around will help your design.

-        Loop (Yellow)
For this design you are slowly bending the top of your candle around on itself, use extra caution, if your candle is not soft it can easily break. Keep bending and adjusting until you are happy with the loop.

Hot Tips:
- Do not try to bend your candle after the cold bath, we accidently did this and broke a few candles.
- Practise patience, don’t try bending your candle too early, this may also sadly end with broken candles

Places we like to get candle holders from:
- Pictured: Dusk
- Op shops or thrift stores
- Local home deco stores
